About New York Independent System Operator, Inc. (NYISO)
The New York Independent System Operator, Inc. (NYISO) is a nonprofit company responsible for managing New York's electric grid and its competitive wholesale electricity marketplace. It describes itself as independent of government agencies and energy companies, and it is governed by a ten-member board of directors. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission exercises regulatory oversight of its activities.
Its work includes matching power supply from producers with consumer demand across the state, running wholesale markets for electricity, capacity and transmission congestion contracts, and conducting one-, five- and ten-year studies to plan for long-term reliability and public-policy needs such as new transmission. It does not generate power or own transmission lines, and it works with producers and utilities instead. Its headquarters is at 10 Krey Boulevard in Rensselaer, close to the state capital of Albany, and its footprint covers the entire state.
