About New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG)
The New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) is a nonprofit civil legal services organization founded in 1990. It provides free legal help to low-income New Yorkers and to people in or near poverty who cannot afford a private attorney. Because it does not apply for or accept Federal Legal Services Corporation funding, it can serve individuals and families who earn somewhat above the government poverty threshold, and it relies largely on private donations.
Its work includes direct representation, case consultation, advocacy, community education, training, financial counseling, and impact litigation. A LegalHealth division provides legal assistance within hospitals and community health organizations, and a Mobile Legal Help Center brings attorneys into local communities. NYLAG's main office is at 100 Pearl Street in Manhattan, with a second office in Mineola (Nassau County, Long Island), and it reports working from more than 150 community sites across New York, such as courts, hospitals and libraries.
