About New York Power Authority
The New York Power Authority (NYPA) is a public benefit corporation owned by New York State. Its official site describes it as the largest state public power organization in the nation, operating 17 generating facilities and more than 1,550 circuit-miles of transmission lines. Over 80 percent of its electricity output is hydropower. It funds its operations mainly through bond sales and electricity revenue, and a seven-member board of trustees appointed by the governor oversees it.
Its activities span electricity generation and storage, statewide transmission, energy efficiency and clean energy programs, and power allocations intended to support economic development. Its customers include businesses, not-for-profit organizations, government facilities, and municipal utilities and rural electric cooperatives. Its main administrative offices are at 123 Main Street in White Plains. A new headquarters building is being built at the Hamilton Green development in the same city, with completion targeted for mid-2027.
