About New York State Assembly
The New York State Assembly is the lower house of the New York State Legislature, alongside the Senate. The Assembly has 150 members, each chosen from a single district, who serve two-year terms without term limits. The body convenes at the State Capitol in Albany, where it passes bills on public policy, sets state spending levels, changes tax rates, and votes on whether to override gubernatorial vetoes, working alongside the governor on the state budget.
Members introduce and vote on legislation, serve on committees and subcommittees, convene hearings with state agencies, and oversee state government entities. Offices of individual members also work with city agencies on constituent concerns and community programs. The chamber's public-facing services include a Public Information Office, which handles bill searches and Freedom of Information requests. Member district offices are listed in the Assembly's directory in communities including the Bronx, Brooklyn, Binghamton and Clarence.
