About New York State Court of Claims
The New York State Court of Claims is a court of the New York State Unified Court System. It hears civil lawsuits seeking money damages from the State of New York and certain state-related entities, such as the State Thruway Authority, the City University of New York, and the Power Authority, the latter only for claims over the appropriation of real property. It does not hear claims against cities, counties, towns, or individual defendants. Its judges are appointed by the Governor with Senate consent to nine-year terms.
The court holds sessions and maintains chambers at several locations across the state, including Albany, where the clerk's office is located in the Robert Abrams Building for Law and Justice. Other listed locations are Binghamton, Buffalo, Hauppauge, New York City, Rochester, Saratoga Springs, Syracuse, Utica, and White Plains. Some of its judges also serve as Acting Justices of the New York State Supreme Court, hearing criminal or civil matters in that court.
