About New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision
The New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) is a New York State government department that runs the state prison and parole system. It is responsible for the care, custody and treatment of people sentenced to state prison, prepares them for re-entry into the community, and supervises people placed on parole. Its stated mission is to improve public safety by providing treatment services in secure facilities and supportive services for parolees under community supervision.
The department's work includes community supervision, which assists formerly incarcerated people with the transition to supervision, and an Executive Clemency Bureau that handles pardons and certificates. Its re-entry services offices help eligible people returning from prison with housing, mental health and medical referrals. Its Office of Special Investigations is the department's investigative body. DOCCS is headquartered in Albany at the Harriman State Office Campus, and its facilities are spread across New York State, with a Syracuse area office among its regional offices. As of June 2026 it operated 41 facilities.
