The New York State Department of Health is the state government department responsible for public health in New York, with its headquarters in Albany. Its responsibilities include promoting disease prevention and control, environmental health, healthy lifestyles and emergency preparedness, supervising local health boards, overseeing vital records, and conducting surveillance of hospitals. The department also runs research at the Wadsworth Center and administers several health insurance programs. It has overseen the health and safety of New Yorkers since 1901.

Its work includes vaccination and immunization programs, disease reporting, and the NYS Health Profiles website, which provides quality and safety information on hospitals, nursing homes, home care agencies and hospices. The Wadsworth Center laboratory and the Vital Records office, which provides copies of birth, death and marriage certificates, are part of the department. Besides its Albany headquarters at Corning Tower, Empire State Plaza, it operates regional, field and district offices, including locations in Syracuse, Rochester and Herkimer.
