The New York State Department of Transportation is a state government agency with its main office at 50 Wolf Road in Albany. It oversees highways, railroads, mass transit systems, ports, waterways and aviation facilities, and its rules are compiled in title 17 of the state's official regulations. Its staff carry out highway maintenance, snow and ice removal, highway and bridge design, and construction inspection, and they also inspect school and charter buses and regulate commercial transportation.

Its Office of Right of Way handles property acquisition for projects.
