About New York State Liquor Authority
The New York State Liquor Authority (SLA) is a state agency created in 1934 under the Alcoholic Beverage Control Law, which followed the repeal of federal prohibition. Its Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control is the agency arm that carries out its work. The SLA has two main functions: issuing licenses and permits for the manufacture, distribution and sale of alcoholic beverages, and enforcing compliance with the Alcoholic Beverage Control Law. Its enforcement work involves local police and communities in bringing administrative actions against licensees that violate the law.
The Authority consists of three Commissioners appointed by the Governor, one of whom is designated as Chair. Its official site lists offices in Albany, New York City and Buffalo, and the Albany office is identified as the main office. The official website also describes programs for public and legislative affairs, alcohol training, and retailer and manufacturer licensing, while cannabis program contacts are listed separately under the Office of Cannabis Management. This is a government regulatory body rather than a law firm.
