About New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD)
The New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) is an executive agency of New York State. It traces its origins to 1978, when it operated as the Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities. The agency coordinates services for New Yorkers with developmental disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, autism spectrum disorders, and Prader-Willi syndrome, and it reports supporting more than 140,000 people.
OPWDD delivers services in two ways: through state-run operations and through a statewide network of roughly 450 nonprofit service providing agencies. Most of its services are funded through Medicaid, and individuals seek eligibility through a review of their application. The agency runs a Front Door intake process, holds quarterly public meetings, and publishes data on the people it serves. Its headquarters is at 44 Holland Avenue in Albany, and its regional offices include Western New York, the Capital District, and several New York City boroughs.
