About New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence
The New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence (OPDV) is a state government agency within the Executive Department, created in 1992 to help New Yorkers respond to and prevent domestic violence. It succeeded the Governor's Commission on Domestic Violence, established in 1983. Under state law it advises the governor and legislature on how state government should respond to domestic violence, and it acts as an advocate for victims and domestic violence programs.
Its work is organized into five bureaus: gender-based violence prevention and programming, external affairs, law enforcement and public safety, the counsel's office, and finance and administration. Activities include public education and outreach, professional training, administering certain grant funds, and reporting recommendations to state leaders. The office operates a 24/7 domestic and sexual violence hotline for New Yorkers but states that it does not itself provide direct victim services. Its main office is at 80 South Swan Street in Albany.
