About New York State Police
The New York State Police is the state police agency of New York and is part of the state Executive Department. The agency traces its work to 1917, when the state established a force to police rural areas. According to its own materials, its responsibilities include ensuring roadway safety, preventing and investigating crime, preparing for and responding to emergencies and disasters, and supporting other law enforcement agencies.
Uniformed troopers patrol state highways and rural communities, while the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, created in 1935, serves as the agency's plainclothes detective branch. Other units include aviation, with four stations, and an Underwater Recovery Team that operates across upstate troops. The state is divided into eleven troops, each covering several counties. The division's headquarters sits on the W. Averell Harriman State Office Campus in Albany, and the Professional Standards Bureau has regional offices in Liverpool and Fishkill.
