About New York State Teachers' Retirement System
The New York State Teachers' Retirement System (NYSTRS) is a public defined benefit pension system established in 1921 by the New York State Legislature. It provides retirement, disability and death benefits to eligible New York State public school teachers and administrators. Its 10-member Board sets policy and oversees System operations, and a separate executive staff handles daily administration. Membership is mandatory for full-time teachers, teaching assistants, guidance counselors and administrators in state public schools, BOCES and eligible charter schools, excluding New York City; part-time membership is optional.
The System reports more than 275,000 active members and nearly 185,000 retirees and beneficiaries. As of June 30, 2025, it had paid $8.7 billion in annual benefits, nearly 80% of which went to New York residents. Its headquarters is in Albany, at 10 Corporate Woods Drive.
