About New York State Thruway Authority
The New York State Thruway Authority (NYSTA) is a public benefit corporation formed in 1950 to build, maintain and operate the New York State Thruway, a system of limited-access highways within the state. It runs a user-fee-supported superhighway of about 570 miles with 27 service areas. Its Legal Department advises the Board, the Executive Director and the Authority itself. A job listing for an Assistant Counsel describes that work as including tort and negligence claims against the Authority, construction contract disputes, and labor matters under collective bargaining agreements and Civil Service Law.
The Authority's principal office is its Administrative Headquarters at 200 Southern Boulevard in Albany. Its bylaws divide the Thruway System into New York, Albany, Syracuse and Buffalo divisions for administration, operation and maintenance. The Legal Department also reviews vehicle damage claims submitted to the Authority, and the Authority's website lists a public phone line for its Albany headquarters.
