About New York State Unified Court System
The New York State Unified Court System is the judicial branch of New York State government and comprises the state's courts, excluding extrajudicial administrative courts. The Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals serves as the system's chief judicial officer, and the Office of Court Administration oversees daily operations, staffing, and budget for all state courts. The courts include appellate bodies such as the Court of Appeals and four Appellate Divisions, along with trial courts including the Supreme Court, Family Court, and Surrogate's Court.
The system hears more than three million cases a year, covering family matters, criminal cases, personal injury claims, commercial disputes, trust and estates issues, and landlord-tenant cases. Units within the system run alternative dispute resolution programs that offer free community mediation, a Counsel's Office that represents the system in litigation, and an Office for Justice Initiatives focused on equal access to justice. Its administrative offices are in New York City and Albany, and courts operate across the state's 62 counties.
