About New York State Workers' Compensation Board
The New York State Workers' Compensation Board is a state agency that administers the workers' compensation system, along with disability benefits and Paid Family Leave. Its stated mission is to protect the rights of employees and employers by ensuring benefits are delivered properly and by promoting compliance with the law. The Board is headed by a Chair selected by the Governor, and its other members are nominated by the Governor and confirmed by the Senate. Its operating expenses are funded through assessments on employers rather than tax revenue.
The agency settles claims, checks that employers carry required coverage, authorizes health care providers, and hears legal appeals through its Full Board. Its New York presence includes nine district offices, located in Albany, Binghamton, Brooklyn, Buffalo, Long Island (Islandia), Manhattan, Queens, Rochester and Syracuse, plus a statewide administrative office in Schenectady. The Board also maintains customer service centers across the state, and most of its offices serve the public by appointment.
