About NYC Department of Social Services
The NYC Department of Social Services (DSS) is a New York City government agency made up of the administrative units of the Human Resources Administration (HRA) and the Department of Homeless Services (DHS). HRA administers benefits including food assistance, cash assistance, emergency rental assistance, and child support services, while DHS provides temporary emergency shelter and helps households move into permanent housing. DSS's Office of Legal Affairs handles subpoenas and Freedom of Information Law requests.
Other functions include Adult Protective Services, disability accommodation, and SNAP centers and Medicaid offices. HRA reports administering more than 15 major public assistance programs and serving more than three million New Yorkers annually. The five boroughs form a single local social services district, with DSS offices at 150 Greenwich Street in Manhattan and HRA program offices in Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Queens.
