About Office of the New York Attorney General

The Office of the New York Attorney General is the state's chief legal office, led by the Attorney General as head of the Department of Law. Its lawyers advise the executive branch of state government and defend actions brought on the state's behalf. The office says its work protects residents, combats crime, ensures public safety, defends civil rights, fights for workers, and safeguards the environment.

Work is organized into divisions including Criminal Justice, Economic Justice, Social Justice, Solicitor General, and State Counsel, with bureaus covering civil rights, environmental protection, health care, labor, real estate finance, and appeals. The office reports more than 700 assistant attorneys general and over 1,700 staff in more than two dozen locations statewide. Its main office is at The Capitol in Albany, and its 13 regional offices include locations in Binghamton, Brooklyn, Buffalo, Harlem (New York City), Mineola, Plattsburgh, Poughkeepsie, Rochester, Hauppauge, Syracuse, Utica, Watertown, and White Plains.
