About Office of the New York State Attorney General
The New York State Office of the Attorney General is the state's chief legal officer and head of the Department of Law. Described by the office as the People's Lawyer, it advises the executive branch, defends the state and its agencies in court, and enforces laws protecting consumers, tenants, patients, workers, investors and charitable donors. It also coordinates statewide civil and criminal investigations.
Its structure includes Criminal Justice, Social Justice, Solicitor General, State Counsel, Executive and Regional Affairs divisions, with bureaus covering civil rights, environmental protection, health care, labor and appeals. The office reports more than 1,700 staff, including over 700 assistant attorneys general, in over two dozen locations across New York State. Its offices in places such as Albany, Binghamton, Brooklyn, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Utica and White Plains carry out defensive, regulatory and affirmative justice functions. A New York City office is located at 28 Liberty Street.
