About Office of the United States Trustee (U.S. Trustee Program)

The Office of the United States Trustee is the name used for the U.S. Trustee Program, a component of the U.S. Department of Justice that supervises the administration of bankruptcy cases and private bankruptcy trustees. Its stated aim is to protect the integrity and efficiency of the bankruptcy system for debtors, creditors and the public. The program is run from a headquarters office in Washington, D.C., and is organized into regional and field offices across the country.

Field offices appoint and oversee private trustees in chapter 7, 12 and 13 cases, supervise chapter 11 reorganizations, preside over or oversee creditor meetings, refer suspected bankruptcy crimes to law enforcement, and take part in appeals. Region 2 covers the federal judicial districts for New York, Connecticut and Vermont, with its regional office in Manhattan. Other New York field offices are listed in Albany, Buffalo, Central Islip and Rochester. The Utica field office, which handled the Utica and Syracuse divisions of the Northern District of New York, was closed effective July 1, 2025, and those matters are now directed to the Rochester office.
