About Offices of the Inspector General

The Offices of the Inspector General (OIG) are a group of three New York State offices. The New York State Inspector General, established under Executive Law Article 4-A, receives and investigates complaints about corruption, fraud, criminal activity, conflicts of interest and abuse involving state government, its employees and those who work with the state. Its jurisdiction covers executive branch agencies, most public authorities and public benefit corporations, including state-funded infrastructure projects. The two sister offices are the Welfare Inspector General, which oversees the integrity of public assistance programs, and the Workers' Compensation Fraud Inspector General, which investigates violations relating to the workers' compensation system.

Beyond complaint intake, the office carries out investigations, audits and systemic reviews, and it recommends changes to state agency programs and procedures. The office says its staff includes investigators, attorneys and forensic investigators. Its main office is in Albany, at Empire State Plaza, Agency Building 2, and it operates a hotline for complaints.
