About Onondaga County Department of Law
The Onondaga County Department of Law, also called the County Attorney's Office, is a government legal office of Onondaga County in Syracuse. The County Attorney heads the office and is selected by the County Executive, subject to approval by the County Legislature. The office serves as the county's civil legal adviser, prepares legal papers and contracts, and handles the defense or prosecution of civil matters in which the county is involved.
The department's units handle municipal, litigation, family court, and contract matters, and its attorneys also draft local laws and resolutions when the County Executive or Legislature requests them. The office represents county departments only and does not provide personal legal advice to members of the public, referring individuals elsewhere for that help. Its listed office is on the 10th floor of the John H. Mulroy Civic Center at 421 Montgomery Street, Syracuse.
