About Port Authority of New York and New Jersey
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is a self-supporting public agency formed in 1921 by agreement between the two states, with its governing board of twelve unpaid commissioners, six appointed by each governor. It builds, operates and maintains transportation and trade infrastructure across air, land, rail and sea, and it relies mainly on tolls, fees and rents rather than tax revenue. Its mandate covers the bi-state port region and regional transportation.
The agency's facilities include airports in the New York and New Jersey region, the New York/New Jersey seaport, the PATH rail transit system, tunnels and bridges linking the two states, and bus terminals in Manhattan. It also takes part in joint development projects and has long owned the World Trade Center site, where it is rebuilding. Its headquarters are at 4 World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan, New York City.
