About Safety Net Project at the Urban Justice Center
The Safety Net Project is a project of the Urban Justice Center, a New York City nonprofit that combines legal services, litigation, research and policy work. It provides free legal help to low- and no-income New Yorkers and treats safe housing, food and basic income as human rights. The project was previously known as the Homelessness Outreach & Prevention Project, and it adopted its current name in early 2013.
Its casework covers eviction defense, repairs and harassment for tenants, including NYCHA residents, as well as public assistance, SNAP benefits, and appeals of unfavorable Fair Hearing decisions. Services are delivered through legal clinics held at food pantries, soup kitchens and community health centers, supported by offices at 40 Rector Street in Lower Manhattan. The project also works with the Safety Net Activists, a membership group of people with lived experience of poverty, on policy campaigns and pursues affirmative litigation. Its clinics serve the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island.
