About Sanctuary for Families

Sanctuary for Families is a New York City-based nonprofit, founded in 1984, that assists victims of domestic violence and their children. Its services include crisis intervention, emergency and transitional shelter, legal assistance and representation, adult and child counseling, and long-term follow-up care, and it also runs training, public awareness and advocacy programs. Its Legal Center describes itself as a provider of free legal services that serves only survivors of domestic violence, sex trafficking and other forms of gender-based violence.

The Legal Center's attorneys handle family law matters such as divorce, child custody, visitation and support, and orders of protection, along with immigration applications for survivors, public benefits, housing and Title IX consultations for student survivors of campus sexual assault. Pro bono attorneys are recruited, trained and supervised to assist with these cases. Services are offered at Family Justice Center locations in Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island, and the organization states that its services are available to survivors living in New York City.
