About Sotheby's
Sotheby's is an international art market company that operates as an auction house. According to its own website, it was established in 1744 and offers art and luxury objects through auctions, private sales, online channels and retail. Its network of specialists spans 40 countries and covers about 70 categories, including Contemporary Art, Old Masters, Jewelry, Watches, Wine and Spirits, and collectible cars and real estate. Wikipedia describes it as a British multinational with its headquarters in New York City, and reports that a private owner acquired it in 2019.
In New York, the company has long run its galleries, auction spaces and offices at 1334 York Avenue on the Upper East Side, a building it has occupied since 1980. In 2025 it sold that property to Weill Cornell Medicine and agreed to lease back several floors. It had also announced plans to move its headquarters to the Breuer Building on Madison Avenue. Its New York presence further includes Sotheby's Salon and private sales galleries in the city.
