The Supreme Court of the State of New York, Appellate Division, First Judicial Department, is one of four regional intermediate appellate courts in New York State, forming the appellate tier of the state's Supreme Court system. It is the first level of appeal from the courts of original jurisdiction in its region, and its territory covers New York County (Manhattan) and the Bronx. The court sits in a courthouse at 27 Madison Avenue in Manhattan, a building designed in the 1890s that opened in 1900.

Beyond hearing appeals, the court reviews civil appeals from the lower appellate terms and may make new findings of fact. Its caseload includes family matters, personal injury claims, commercial disputes, trusts and estates, criminal cases and landlord-tenant matters. The court's website also lists offices and programs, including the Pre-argument Conference Program, the Office of Attorneys for Children, Mental Hygiene Legal Service, the Assigned Counsel Plan (18B) Criminal Panel, and attorney grievance and character-and-fitness committees.
