About Supreme Court of the State of New York
The Supreme Court of the State of New York is the state's principal trial court, part of the New York State Unified Court System. It holds unlimited original jurisdiction but generally takes matters that fall outside the authority of narrower trial courts. In New York City it hears civil cases and felony prosecutions, while elsewhere in the state most criminal matters are handled by county courts. Its justices are elected from thirteen judicial districts.
The court includes a Commercial Division for complex commercial cases, and its Appellate Division hears appeals from lower courts. Trial branches exist in each of the state's 62 counties, and the Unified Court System provides online case search tools covering civil Supreme Court cases statewide. The Court of Appeals is the state's highest court, so this Supreme Court is not a court of last resort. This entry describes a court, not a law firm, and the sources do not list individual office addresses beyond county-level branches.
