About Syracuse City Court
The Syracuse City Court is a city court within the New York State Unified Court System, serving Onondaga County. City Courts outside New York City decide civil suits involving claims up to $15,000, handle misdemeanors and lesser offenses, and arraign defendants accused of felonies. Its small claims part is held before arbitrators, and its monetary limit for those claims is up to $5000 (exclusive of interest and costs) for money damages only.
The court also runs a traffic division, a domestic violence court, and a landlord and tenant eviction court, along with specialized treatment parts. The mission of the Syracuse Community Treatment Court (SCTC) is to improve the processing of drug cases through the expeditious entry of eligible defendants into judicially monitored drug treatment. The main courthouse, The Honorable James C. Tormey III Criminal Courthouse, is at 505 South State Street in Syracuse, while the treatment court sits in the John C. Dillon Public Safety Building at 511 South State Street, Room 117. Court personnel are barred from giving legal advice.
