About The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation
The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation is a private, not-for-profit grantmaking foundation headquartered in New York City. It was established in 1969 by Ailsa Mellon Bruce and Paul Mellon, children of Andrew W. Mellon, through the consolidation of the Avalon and Old Dominion foundations. Its stated mission centers on the arts and humanities, with the aim of building just communities enriched by meaning and guided by critical thinking. The foundation works by making grants, and it says it has awarded more than 20,000 grants since 1969.
Its grantmaking runs through four core areas, Higher Learning, Public Knowledge, Arts and Culture, and Humanities in Place, along with signature Presidential Initiatives. Most recipients are colleges, universities, museums, libraries and other cultural and academic institutions, and most grants go to U.S. 501(c)(3) public charities. In New York, its office is at 140 East 62nd Street in Manhattan, and its endowment is managed from that location. It is not a law firm, and its published information does not describe legal practice areas.
