About The Door's Legal Services Center
The Door's Legal Services Center is the civil legal unit of The Door, a New York City youth development organization. It was founded in 1992 to fill a gap in free legal help for young people in the city, and it works with people roughly between the ages of 12 and 24. Its staff combines attorneys with social workers, paralegals and administrative assistants, and it gives legal advice, advocacy and representation on non-criminal matters.
The Center's immigration work includes humanitarian relief such as Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, asylum, and U and T visas, along with removal defense and representation for minors held in federal custody. Its civil work covers family law, foster care, emancipation, landlord-tenant issues, public benefits, identification documents and taxes. Services are offered in English, Spanish and French. In New York State, the Center operates from 555 Broome Street in Manhattan and from an office in the Bronx, and it represents clients in New York City immigration courts and in State Family Courts in several surrounding counties.
