About The Family Center
The Family Center is a nonprofit organization that works with New Yorkers facing illness, crisis and loss. Its civil legal work is run through the Legal Wellness Institute, a law department inside the agency that offers free legal services to families in matters such as housing, custody and public benefits. Attorneys and advocates there are trained in several areas of law so that interconnected legal problems can be resolved together. The organization also provides case management, advocacy, health education and behavioral health programs.
The legal team handles housing matters such as nonpayment and holdover proceedings, family and matrimonial matters including custody, visitation, child support, divorce and guardianship, public benefits hearings, and lifetime planning such as advance directives and wills. Eligibility covers residents of New York City's five boroughs who are coping with a serious illness or disability. Attorneys appear in courts across the city and can meet clients at homes and hospitals. Its office is at 493 Nostrand Avenue in Brooklyn.
