About The Fortune Society
The Fortune Society is a nonprofit founded in 1967 that works with people who have been incarcerated or are facing jail or prison time. Its stated mission is to support successful reentry after incarceration and to promote alternatives to incarceration. It describes a one-stop service model that includes housing, substance use treatment, counseling, career development, education and recreation. It also operates the David Rothenberg Center for Public Policy, an advocacy arm focused on criminal justice policy.
Some of its services have a legal character. A LawHelpNY listing says it helps participants with identification problems, evictions, child support or custody matters, and appeals of denied benefits. Its Alternatives to Incarceration program places court advocates in Manhattan, Queens, the Bronx and Brooklyn, where they work with prosecutors, defense attorneys and judges. In New York State, its main office is in Long Island City, Queens, and it also lists sites in Manhattan and the Bronx, along with supportive housing residences.
