About The Innocence Project, Inc.
The Innocence Project, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit legal organization founded in 1992 by Peter Neufeld and Barry Scheck. It uses DNA testing and other post-conviction methods to seek the exoneration of people it believes were wrongly convicted, and it describes itself as a national litigation and public policy organization. Its stated mission is to free the innocent, prevent wrongful convictions, and create fair and equitable systems of justice.
The organization handles post-conviction casework, accepting only cases in which DNA testing can prove innocence, and it files briefs in courts on forensic science and other recurring causes of wrongful conviction. It also works on criminal justice policy reform and is a founding member of the Innocence Network, a coalition of independent innocence organizations. Its main office is at 40 Worth Street in New York City, and its website reports that it has helped free more than 250 innocent people from prison.
