About The Legal Project
The Legal Project is a private, not-for-profit organization that gives free civil legal help to people who cannot afford a lawyer in New York State. The Capital District Women's Bar Association founded it in 1995, and it started by assisting low-income survivors of domestic violence. Its client base now includes elder citizens, crime victims, immigrants, veterans, and other vulnerable individuals and families. Staff attorneys and pro bono volunteer attorneys from the community both handle its cases.
Its program areas include family matters for domestic violence victims, uncontested divorce assistance, immigration help, foreclosure and homeowner assistance, elder law such as wills and powers of attorney, bankruptcy and credit matters, services for human trafficking survivors, and eviction defense for tenants. In New York, it has offices at 204 Lafayette Street in Schenectady and at 1 Steuben Place in Albany. Its stated service area covers multiple counties across the Greater Capital Region.
