About The New York State Senate
The New York State Senate is the upper house of the New York State Legislature, serving alongside the Assembly as the legislative branch of state government. It has 63 members, each elected from a district across the state to a two-year term. Its main job is to draft, discuss, amend and approve changes to the laws of New York, working with the Assembly and the Governor on enacting, amending or repealing statutes and on the state budget, and voting on whether to uphold or override gubernatorial vetoes.
Its official website, nysenate.gov, provides public access to current laws organized by subject, searchable bill and legislation records, listings of senators and committees, and legislative data offered through a free API. The chamber meets in the State Capitol in Albany. It is a government body rather than a law firm or legal services provider, so the practice-area list does not apply to its own functions.
