About U.S. Department of Homeland Security

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is a federal Cabinet-level agency created in 2002 by combining 22 separate federal departments and agencies. Its stated mission is to safeguard the American people, the homeland, and the nation's values. Its work spans customs, border and immigration enforcement, emergency response to natural and manmade disasters, counterterrorism, and cybersecurity. The department reports more than 260,000 employees across operational components such as U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the U.S. Secret Service.

DHS carries out part of its mission by issuing regulatory actions through its components, which hold regulatory responsibilities of their own. Immigration functions are split among DHS components and the Justice Department, whose Executive Office for Immigration Review runs the immigration courts. In New York State, DHS-related offices include an Office of the Principal Legal Advisor for ICE in Newburgh, in the Hudson Valley, and multiple DHS field offices at 26 Federal Plaza in New York City, where USCIS and ICE operate alongside the federal immigration court. Public reporting has also described DHS-operated space used for certain New York immigration hearings.
