About U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is an independent federal agency, created under the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, that oversees securities exchanges, brokers and dealers, investment advisers and mutual funds. Its stated mission combines investor protection, fair and efficient markets, and capital formation. The Commission has up to five members appointed by the President with Senate consent, and no more than three may belong to the same political party.
The agency enforces the federal securities laws through investigations and civil actions in federal courts and administrative proceedings, and it examines regulated entities such as investment advisers and broker-dealers. It also runs investor education programs and maintains the EDGAR database of public filings. Its headquarters is in Washington, D.C. Its New York Regional Office, at 100 Pearl Street in New York City, primarily carries out enforcement and examination activities in New York and New Jersey.
