About UJA-Federation of New York
UJA-Federation of New York is a nonprofit philanthropic organization, founded in 1917 and headquartered in New York City, that raises money and distributes it to a network of partner nonprofits in New York, Israel and dozens of other countries. Its legal name is United Jewish Appeal-Federation of Jewish Philanthropies of New York, Inc., a name that reflects a 1986 merger of two predecessor organizations. It holds 501(c)(3) charitable status. It is not a law firm, and its registry listings reflect attorneys who report an affiliation with the organization rather than a legal practice it operates.
Its work is grouped into three areas: caring for people in need, such as families facing poverty, older adults, Holocaust survivors and people with disabilities; responding to crises, including antisemitism, disasters and conflict; and strengthening Jewish life through education, summer camps and community programs. The organization also states that it has contributed pro bono legal service hours to help New Yorkers. Its contact listings identify locations in New York City (Midtown East, Manhattan), Brooklyn, Long Island and Westchester County.
