The United States Attorney's Office for the Northern District of New York is a federal governmental office covering 32 counties in Northern and Central New York, a territory the office says serves about 3.4 million people. It prosecutes federal crimes committed within that district, including drug, firearms, environmental, child exploitation, fraud, public corruption, and terrorism cases. Its Civil Division defends the United States and its agencies in tort, constitutional tort, medical malpractice, and bankruptcy litigation, and it pursues False Claims Act matters.

The office is organized into Criminal, Civil, and Appellate divisions, and the Appellate Division handles criminal and civil appeals. Its staffed locations are in Albany, Binghamton, Plattsburgh, and Syracuse, and it reports employing roughly 50 Assistant U.S. Attorneys. A recent redesignation made the Albany office the primary headquarters, a role Syracuse had held since the years after the late 1970s opening of the James M. Hanley Federal Building.
