About Urban Justice Center

The Urban Justice Center is a nonprofit legal services and advocacy organization in New York City, founded in 1984 by Doug Lasdon. It combines direct civil legal assistance with systemic advocacy, community education and political organizing for low-income and marginalized New Yorkers. It began with free legal clinics for homeless people and its work now spans a wide range of issues, including homelessness, discrimination, civil rights and domestic violence.

The organization carries out its work through a set of projects. These include the Safety Net Project, which handles public benefits, eviction defense and NYCHA public housing matters; the Domestic Violence Project, which provides family law and immigration services to survivors; the Mental Health Project; the International Refugee Assistance Project; and the Street Vendor Project. Its headquarters is at 40 Rector Street in Lower Manhattan, and the Safety Net Project runs legal clinics at community organizations across the city. The Domestic Violence Project states that its offices are located throughout the five boroughs.
