About Vera Institute of Justice
Vera Institute of Justice is a nonprofit research and policy organization focused on criminal justice reform, not a law firm. It was founded in 1961 in New York City to advocate for alternatives to money bail and is now a national organization that partners with affected communities and government leaders. Its stated mission is to end the criminalization and mass incarceration of people of color, immigrants, and people experiencing poverty. Its work relies on researchers, advocates, and policy experts who pursue changes in the criminal legal and immigration systems.
Stated priorities include ending money bail, reducing reliance on jails and detention, improving conditions behind bars, and ensuring that immigrants facing deportation can reach an attorney. The organization has also received a government contract to provide legal assistance to unaccompanied migrant children, and in 2025 it was told that five of its federal grants were terminated. In New York State, its headquarters has been in Brooklyn since 2019, at 34 35th Street, and its New York City work includes the Greater Justice New York initiative, which focuses on data, research, and advocacy across New York.
