The Office of the Westchester County Attorney operates as the County Law Department, which handles the civil legal business of Westchester County and its departments under a statutory mandate dating to 1937. It is led by County Attorney John M. Nonna, who is appointed by the County Executive with the approval of the County Board of Legislators. The department is described as one of the largest law offices in Westchester County. Its attorneys advise elected officials, draft legislation and represent the county's interests.

The department is organized into four bureaus: Appeals, Opinions and Legislation; Contracts and Real Estate; Family Court; and Litigation. The Family Court Bureau represents the county in child welfare, support and juvenile delinquency matters in the county's three Family Courts, while the Litigation Bureau handles trials and administrative cases. The office is located at 148 Martine Avenue in White Plains. It is not authorized to represent private individuals generally, only the county and, in some circumstances, its officers and employees.
