About Westchester County Law Department
The Westchester County Law Department is a unit of county government rather than a private firm, and its stated purpose is to serve the legal needs of Westchester County Government. Under a statutory charge dating to 1937, it conducts the county's civil legal business and that of its departments. The County Attorney, appointed by the County Executive with the approval of the County Board of Legislators, directs the department.
Four bureaus carry out the department's work. The Appeals, Opinions and Legislation Bureau advises elected officials, helps draft legislation and argues before state and federal appellate courts. The Contracts and Real Estate Bureau handles contract and property questions for the county. The Family Court Bureau represents the county in child welfare, support and juvenile delinquency matters across the county's three Family Courts.
