How to Check a New York Attorney's Bar Status

Before you hire or trust a lawyer in New York, it pays to confirm two things: that they are actually licensed, and that their license is currently in good standing. Both are matters of public record, and checking takes only a minute.

Every attorney admitted in New York is registered with the State's Office of Court Administration. That registration carries a status that tells you whether the attorney may practice right now.

What each status means

The most common status is currently registered, which means the attorney is in good standing and authorized to practice. Other statuses signal a problem:

• Suspended — not authorized to practice, whether for discipline or for failing to register.
• Disbarred — removed from the roll of attorneys; the most serious sanction.
• Delinquent — has not completed the required biennial registration.
• Deceased or retired — no longer practicing.

How to verify in under a minute

The authoritative source is the official New York Attorney Search, maintained by the state court system. Enter the attorney's name or registration number and you will see their live status, year of admission, and registered location.

If a person claims to be a New York attorney but does not appear in that search at all, treat it as a serious warning sign and do not proceed until you understand why.

Why a directory like this helps

Sites like this one make the same public data searchable and browsable — by city, by law school, by status. It is a fast way to look someone up or to explore who practices in your area. For any decision that matters, confirm the live status at the official source above, since records here refresh periodically and may lag.

The bottom line

Checking a New York attorney's standing is quick, free, and public. Verify the license, confirm the status is current, and when stakes are high, cross-check against the state's official search before you rely on anyone.
